Rosslyn Chapel Stone Mystery Decoded

Check out the story below and play the video. It's well worth your time if you are as hip as most readers of this blog. For the uninitiated, Rosslyn Chapel is one is one of the most unique medeival churches in the British Isles, decorated with a host of cryptic stone symbols and architectural anomolies, and which is held dear by the Knights Templar and Freemasons alike. This is an unexusable oversimplification of hte site, but I will sum it all up with the additional statement that it is held to be one of several possible resting places of the Holy Grail.

ASSOCIATED PRESS- The stone carved angel, bottom, and cubes that lead a team of code-breakers to claim to have found music hidden for 500 years in the intricate carvings, are seen at Rosslyn Chapel, in the village of Roslin, near Edinburgh, Scotland Wednesday May 2, 2007. Father and son team Thomas and Stuart Mitchell say they deciphered a musical code hewn into stone cubes on the ribs supporting the ceiling of Rosslyn Chapel. The music has been recorded, and will get its official premiere in the chapel May 18. Rosslyn Chapel is where author Dan Brown set the climax of the best-selling book 'The Da Vinci Code.' This is amazing. Why would someone go through all the trouble of hiding music?

I suppose that is part of the mystery. A few theories include:

1) The music included tritones, which were supposedly banned by the catholic church for having a diabolical nature. See the below quote from Wikipedia, which explains the phenomenon and refutes the claims of church persecution:
"The tritone is a restless interval, classed as a dissonance in Western music from the early Middle Ages through the end of the common practice period. The name diabolus in musica ("the Devil in music") has been applied to the interval from at least the early eighteenth century. Telemann in 1733 notes that "mi contra fa...welches die alten den satan in der music nenneten," ("Mi against Fa, which the ancients called 'Satan in music'") while Mattheson in 1739 writes that the "alten Solmisatores dieses angenehme Intervall mi contra fa oder den Teufel in der Music genannt haben." ("Older singers with solmization called this pleasant interval 'mi contra fa' or 'the devil in music'.") [1] Although both of these authors cite the association with the devil as from the past, there are no known citations of this term from the Middle Ages, as is commonly asserted.[2] (Suggestions that singers were excommunicated or otherwise punished by the church for invoking this interval are likewise fanciful). However, avoidance of the interval for musical reasons has a long history, stretching back to the parallel organum of the Musica Enchiriadis."

2)The music may have been a "secret Hymn" which was sacred to a mystery religion which had been incorporated into Templar belief. The Templars are known to have incorporated various influences from the near eastern religions they encountered, perhaps most specifically elements of cabala and gnostic mystery religions. Perhaps too much to go into here, but music played a key role, as in the hymns of the the Orphic & Elusian Mysteries.

3) The folks who figured this out wondered if vibrations at certain frequencies might also "unlock" some of the stone construction to reveal hidden mysteries of the chapel.

Maby Hiram Abiffs lost word is encoded within the song ? and there is a bug that eats stone and buy playing certin tones you can manipulate the bugs to carve stone in a certin pattern. This is supposedly the secret to the final stage of the constuction of solomons temple as it had to be pure and the stone can not be carved with metal tools as metal it the tool of war and would taint the spiritual purity of the Tempel.Do you know the story of Hiram Abiff King of Tyre, king Solomans master builder and his lost word. It is a Masonic story.sincearly James A Putland.Australia.
